How To Ensure Students Are Actively Engaged and Not Just Compliant
Aim for at least three in any activity:
- The activity, strategy, task, or idea allows for the student to personalize his or her response. Students can bring their life experiences into the activity and make it their own.
- Expectations are clear and modeled.
- There is a sense of audience above and beyond the teacher and the test. The activity has value to someone else.
- There is social interaction. Students have an opportunity to talk about the learning and interact.
- There is a culture of emotional safety. Mistakes valued because they are an opportunity to learn.
- Students have opportunities to choose within the activity. CHOICE = MOTIVATION
- The activity is authentic. This doesn’t mean it always must connect directly to the student’s world, but it should connect to reality.
- The task is new and novel. If kids are bored, it’s hard to see engagement
Students should be able to explain what they are working on, the expectations, and how the activity will lead to learning.
