7 Principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching (video)
Front Porch Principles (Welcome & Invite/Build Relationships...essential first steps):
1. Kids get it that you get them (embrace all cultures...dress, interests, literature)
2. Kids get it that you like them (connect with each kid, tone of voice, feeling of warmth)
3. School looks like me…diversity lives here and is honored (images, artwork, student work-maker wall-etc.)
Begin each class with an affirmation: How is everyone doing? Repeat after me…This is a good day! Everything is going to be okay!
Create energy. Show students you appreciate, honor, value, love and respect them.
Instructional Strategies:
4. Students are 'caught' being smart (reinforce academic achievement, get them to believe they are intelligent)
5. Instructional strategies accommodate kids (music, games, activities they love)
6. Classroom is managed with firm, consistent, and loving controls (tough love, discipline becomes instructional not punitive)
7. Interactions stress collectivity as well as individuality (mix of large group, small group, individual...focus on student centered activity not teacher)
